Civil Engineering works at Elizabeth College Sports Pavillion

Geomarine, one of the Channel Islands’ leading civil engineering contractors was delighted to have won the civil engineering contract for the Elizabeth College Sports Pavillion.  Following the organisation’s appointment, Geomarine was then invited by the main contractor, F Watson & Son, to ‘value engineer’ the project identifying areas of greater efficiency and effectiveness.   Following this successful audit, many changes were made to the planned drainage scheme in terms of materials utilised, manpower requirements and overall structure.

On completion of the ‘value engineering’ service, Geomarine began the construction works which would require specialist piling, drainage and concrete construction skills as Geomarine was appointed to undertake all three sections by the client.

Geomarine, as a civil engineering contractor offering the full spectrum of services - piling, site investigation, drainage, underpinning, rope access, marine and civil construction - can accommodate broad briefs like the Elizabeth Pavillion using its in house specialist teams.

Chris Wrench, Managing Director, Geomarine Guernsey, commended the work carried out by the three Geomarine teams on site.  ‘I am delighted that we had the opportunity to work on this interesting community project which will provide a great hub for sports enthusiasts in particular.  The three teams which Geomarine had on site carrying out drainage, piling and concrete services worked seamlessly together in what was a relatively short timescale for the size of the works required.  The teams planned their workloads effectively so that they, and other contractors on site, could keep to the challenging schedule while completing work to the highest standards.  At our busiest period we had 15 team members on site.’

Geomarine installed 50, 9.5 metre deep piles which were then cut off to allow reinforced concrete beams to be formed and the , construction of a 300 sq metre concrete slab.
There were two separate drainage networks installed for both foul and surface water sewer systems including a series of pipes and manholes laid to falls and terminating with a connection into the existing Sewer within the public highway. In excess of 400 metres of drainage lines were installed within the site.  The surface line was required to go through a petrol interceptor unit as petrol run off from the car park water needed to be treated before being allowed back into the drainage system.

Geomarine enjoyed being part of the team on the Elizabeth College Sports Pavillion project, an assignment which required the organisation to deploy a team from each of the three core areas of the business.  All teams worked to achieve a finish of the highest standard within the timescales required by the client.
